R. Venkataramani named as the new Attorney General of India

Senior advocate R. Venkataramani has been appointed as the new Attorney General of India for a tenure of three years. He will succeed K. K. Venugopal, whose term comes to an end on September 30.
Born in Pondicherry on April 13, 1950, R. Venkataramani is a Supreme Court lawyer with 42 years of experience. He enrolled in July 1977 in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and shifted his practice to the Supreme Court in the year 1979. He was designated Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in the year 1997.
With over four decades of practice at the Supreme Court, R. Venkataramani has specialised in Constitutional law, Law of Indirect Taxes, Human Rights Law, Civil and Criminal Law. He has served as a member of the Law Commission of India in 2010 and 2013 and has represented the Central Government, several State Governments, Universities, and Public Sector Undertakings before the Supreme Court and High Courts.
He has also served as a Law Member in the ‘Expert Group on Welfare Legislations’ set up by the Planning Commission of India in the year 1990, and was a Member of the South Asian Task Force on Judiciary consisting of Members of SAARC Nations to submit reports on the conditions of the Judiciary, reforms in institutional structures and conditions of service, etc. with a view to enhancing the rule of law and the availability of efficacious legal remedies.
Outgoing Attorney General K K Venugopal succeeded Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi as the 15th AG in July 2017 for three years. When his three-year tenure came to an end in 2020, 91-year-old Venugopal had requested that he be relieved of his post, citing his age. However, the Government requested him to continue and kept extending his tenure.
