Facebook to shut down its podcast service next month

Facebook will stop letting users add podcasts to its platform this week, and will erase all podcasts starting June 3. The company has said that it won’t be announcing the shuttering of its podcast department to customers, but will leave that to publishers.

The company’s short-form audio product Soundbites and its central audio hub will be shut down over the coming weeks. Live Audio Rooms will now simply be integrated into Facebook Live, with the option being given to go live with just audio or both audio and video.

Facebook launched its live audio and podcast service in June last year amid a craze for social audio platforms stirred by the live audio app Clubhouse. Facebook has said it has more than 170 million users following a podcast, but the social media company’s aim was to bring more engagement to podcasting.

One potential reason that the company is stepping away from podcasts is that it did not increase engagement on the social media app. It was reported that Facebook was placing less focus on audio in its conversations with podcast producers, and leaning more heavily on other ideas including metaverse events.

Facebook spokesperson Adelaide Coronado said that these changes represented an attempt by the company to simplify its audio offerings. Meta and Facebook are now relieved to leave the whole podcasts business to Spotify, Clubhouse and co.
