Nvidia eyes ARM roadmap for AI, 5G integration from server to card to chip

Corporations want to use the combination of AI and 5G on open systems computing, including industry-standard servers. First use cases of AI on 5G will be enterprise computer vision apps that need 5G bandwidth, such as to a shop floor.

Nvidia has a roadmap that extends beyond the initial server configuration. The next step, coming sometime next year, is what Nvidia calls "AI-on-5G on a card.

Nvidia has decided to bet on both Arm and x86 platforms for the 5G edge, with a new data processing unit –SmartNIC – that packs 16 Arm cores. NVIDIA’s strong focus on AI and machine learning is going to be an essential element of 5G networks, and AI and 5G are already essential elements of the applications that run on top of a 5G network.

ARM is a leading provider of 5G in mobile phones, but as the 5G RAN host infrastructure evolves, there is an increasing need to provide the kind of high performance and power per watt known for ARM CPUs, said Ronnie Vasishta, Head of Nvidia Telecom products.

We believe that AI and machine learning will be an integral part of 5G networks, and AI and 5G are integral elements of applications running on 5G networks,” said Vasishta. I am. Therefore, he said, AI accelerators need to be placed next to the network elements that run the Radio Access Network (RAN) stack.

Nvidia had already announced a partnership to develop 5G machines at its annual GTC conference in April. The ARM-based chip element is a new element in Monday’s press release.

The announcement will take place on the first day of the Mobile World Congress Trade Show in Barcelona, which was moved from the regular slots in February and cancelled in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.
