Apple's latest technology allows software updates on unopened iPhones

While ending support for earlier OS versions, Apple is promoting its most recent software for all iOS customers. The company can update an iPhone using its most recent system without ever activating the device. In reality, the company could still upgrade an iPhone while it was still in its experimental packaging using a "pad-like device" that is accessible to Apple Store staff.

This device could begin rolling out across Apple Stores before the end of the year. However, it is possible that users may never hear about such a device being present with Apple—as it could be something employees use behind closed doors; rather than being consumer-facing.

Recently, Apple itself had to address issues with the iPhone 15 Pro’s iOS 17 version, which could cause the phone to overheat. However, a patch, iOS 17.0.1, was released to resolve these heating concerns for the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro. In such situations, Apple’s purported updating pad device—or whatever Apple might internally call it (as it is not a consumer-facing product), could prove to be quite useful.
