Nandan Nilekani is an Indian entrepreneur, bureaucrat and politician. The brain behind the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and its first chairman, he defended Aadhaar in the face of a storm of criticism, saying there was nothing wrong in the government’s decision to expand the scheme’s use. Now Aadhaar to link to PAN will make the PAN number unique. After a successful career at Infosys, he headed the Government of India’s technology committee, TAGUP.
Nandan co-founded Infosys with six others under the leadership of Narayana Murthy, and worked in the company for twenty-eight years. Nandan gave up his role as Infosys co-Chairman in 2009 to take up the government position at the UIDAI, at the invitation of then PM Shri. Dr. Manmohan Singh. Nandan is the president of the governing body of NCAER, the National Council of Applied Economic Research. In 2006, Nandan received the prestigious ‘Padma Bhushan.
