Bengaluru-based deeptech startup Comminent has raised $2 million (INR 17.5 crore) in funding from Transition VC to accelerate the rollout of smart city IoT solutions across India and beyond. The fresh capital will be used for hiring talent, scaling manufacturing, and building inventory to meet growing demand.
Founded in 2018 by Amarjeet Kumar and Vikas Kashyap, Comminent specializes in standards-based RF mesh communication platforms that enable advanced smart utility solutions. The company is already contracted to deliver over one million smart electricity meter endpoints in India and is actively pursuing additional large-scale smart metering projects. Beyond electricity, Comminent plans to expand into smart street lighting, water metering, and intelligent infrastructure management.
India’s smart meter revolution presents a multi-billion-dollar opportunity. With a government target of installing 250 million smart meters in the next 4–5 years, the potential market is among the largest in the world. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) alone has deployed more than 500,000 smart meters and is targeting 10 million installations, projecting annual savings of ₹30,000 crore ($3.6 billion) through reduced power theft and better billing accuracy.
Comminent’s technology is device-agnostic, scalable, and designed to bridge critical connectivity gaps in smart utility networks. Its solutions align perfectly with India’s Smart Cities Mission, which has already achieved 94% completion of 8,067 projects across 100 cities, deploying over 84,000 CCTV cameras and establishing Integrated Command and Control Centres nationwide. This digital backbone now opens the door for next-generation applications like advanced metering, intelligent lighting, and integrated water management.
Looking ahead, Comminent aims to achieve ₹300 crore ($36 million) in revenue by FY28 while exploring global partnerships in markets such as the US and Japan, positioning itself as a key player in the global IoT-powered smart city ecosystem.
