Ransomware Attack on Software Supplier Causes Disruptions for Starbucks
By MYBRANDBOOK
Starbucks (SBUX.O) announced that a ransomware attack on a third-party software supplier has impacted its ability to manage employee schedules and time tracking. The coffee chain confirmed on Monday that the outage has disrupted a back-end process crucial for tracking barista hours and scheduling shifts.
Despite the challenges, Starbucks assured that its customer service operations remain unaffected. The company is actively working to ensure all employees are fully paid for their hours worked, with minimal disruption or discrepancies.
“We are committed to resolving this issue swiftly and ensuring our partners are compensated accurately,” a Starbucks spokesperson stated. The company is collaborating with the affected vendor to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
Blue Yonder, a UK-based provider of supply chain software to Starbucks and other major retailers, confirmed on Thursday that it has been impacted by a ransomware attack. The company stated that the incident has caused disruptions and assured that efforts are underway to resolve the issue and restore normal operations.
The recent ransomware attack on UK-based supply chain software provider Blue Yonder has forced several of its clients, including Starbucks, to adapt to manual processes. Starbucks, which relies on Blue Yonder's software to schedule shifts and track workers’ hours in North America, has resorted to using pen and paper for these tasks. Despite the disruption, the coffee retailer’s customer service and store hours remain unaffected.
At Morrison’s, the attack impacted warehouse management systems, but the grocery chain is now operating on backup systems. Similarly, Sainsbury’s and Asda reported using Blue Yonder software but confirmed their backup systems are functioning to prevent major disruptions.
These events underscore the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures across the supply chain and retail sectors.
