Apple's eco-friendly initiatives result in a 22% reduction in carbon emissions
By MYBRANDBOOK
The adoption of cleaner energy sources by Apple's suppliers is largely responsible for the significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions reported in the company's most recent sustainability report. From 20.6 million metric tonnes in 2022 to 16.1 million metric tonnes in 2023, the IT giant's overall carbon dioxide emissions were reduced. Apple has remarkably reduced its overall emissions by 55% since 2015.
In 2023, approximately 58% of Apple's emissions were attributed to the goods and services it procured, equating to 9.4 million metric tons of CO2. This figure is a decrease from the previous year's 13.4 million metric tons. If this trend continues, Apple could fulfill its pledge of reducing emissions by 75% by the year 2030, as stated in the company's sustainability report.
Apple has been actively encouraging its suppliers to switch to renewable energy and improve energy efficiency. This initiative has resulted in a saving of 2 billion kWh of electricity last year at 100 supplier facilities, preventing nearly 1.7 million metric tons of carbon emissions. The company's efforts are part of its broader commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by the end of this decade.
