The latest update introduces enhanced calling tools focused on seamless cross-device communication, improved group call management and better audio-video quality, reflecting WhatsApp’s continued push to strengthen its platform for personal and professional conversations.
WhatsApp has introduced a series of new calling features designed to make voice and video communication more flexible across devices. The update brings browser-based calling, call transfers between devices, waiting room controls for group calls, background noise suppression and faster high-definition video, broadening the platform's communication capabilities.
The rollout enables users to make and receive both voice and video calls directly through a supported web browser, eliminating the need to install the desktop application. The move is aimed at users who rely on shared computers, work systems with software restrictions or those who simply prefer accessing WhatsApp through a browser.
Announcing the update, WhatsApp executive Kunal Shah said the platform was extending its calling experience to web browsers while also introducing several enhancements to improve convenience and call quality. He highlighted that users would also gain access to additional features that make switching between devices and managing group calls more efficient.
Browser calling brings desktop convenience
The browser-based calling feature supports both individual and group conversations while retaining WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. According to the company, users will be able to access capabilities already available on mobile and desktop versions, including screen sharing, emoji reactions during calls, a dedicated Calls tab, recent call history and favourite contacts.
By extending these functions to web browsers, WhatsApp aims to deliver a consistent communication experience regardless of the device being used. The company said the feature is intended to make calling more accessible without requiring additional software downloads.
Another key addition is the ability to transfer an ongoing group call from one device to another without disconnecting. This allows users to begin a conversation on a smartphone or tablet and continue it seamlessly on a desktop or browser after reaching home or the office. The same flexibility also applies when switching back to a mobile device.
New controls improve group call management
WhatsApp has also introduced a waiting room feature for group calls created through call links. Hosts can enable an approval option that places participants in a virtual waiting area until they are granted access. The feature is expected to provide organisers with greater control over who joins ongoing conversations, particularly during larger meetings or private discussions.
To improve voice clarity, the platform has added background noise suppression that automatically reduces surrounding sounds during calls. The feature is designed to enhance conversations in crowded or noisy environments and can be adjusted through in-call settings whenever required.
Focus on better video quality and collaboration
The update also introduces Quick HD, which is intended to improve video quality within the first few seconds of a call rather than gradually increasing resolution. This enhancement is expected to deliver a smoother visual experience from the beginning of video conversations.
With these additions, WhatsApp continues to expand beyond text messaging by strengthening its calling and collaboration capabilities. The latest features reflect the company's broader effort to support seamless communication across multiple devices while improving the overall quality, reliability and management of voice and video interactions for users worldwide.
