Some owners of Google Home speakers are reporting a strange bug that causes their devices to download hundreds of gigabytes of data in the background.
Driven by a failed firmware update, some affected units have consumed over 200 gigabytes per day, raising serious concerns for users on capped internet plans.
Google has acknowledged the glitch—which primarily impacts its newer speaker models—and confirmed that an automatic fix is currently rolling out to resolve the issue for all affected households.
The issue appears to affect primarily the newer Google Home Speaker model, although the overall extent of the problem remains unclear. Data consumption also varies significantly between devices.
While one user reported that their speaker had downloaded just 2GB of data over the past month, another affected device consumed 132GB during the same period.
The inconsistent data usage could pose a concern for users with limited broadband or mobile data plans, as excessive background downloads may exhaust their allocated data without their knowledge. Until the fix reaches all affected devices, users may need to monitor their speakers’ data consumption to avoid unexpected usage.
