Google has officially announced the rollout of its new Gemini-powered Audio feature in Google Docs, bringing advanced text-to-speech (TTS) technology to its productivity suite. This update allows users to transform written content into realistic, natural-sounding audio, making Google Docs more accessible, user-friendly, and efficient for both readers and writers.

What & How: Google Docs Audio Feature?

The new Google Docs Audio tool enables users to listen to their documents instead of only reading them. With Gemini AI integration, it provides lifelike voices, customizable playback speeds, and multiple voice styles to suit different preferences. This makes it ideal for multitasking, proofreading, accessibility needs, and improving comprehension.

Readers can access the feature through the Tools > Audio menu, where the “Listen to this tab” option allows them to instantly play the current document.
Authors can insert Audio buttons via Insert > Audio buttons, letting collaborators click and listen directly within the file. These buttons can be customized in label, size, and color.

Currently, the Google Docs text-to-speech feature is available only in English and limited to desktop users. The rollout will be completed by the end of this month. Eligible plans include Google AI Pro, Gemini Ultra, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers under the Google Workspace suite.

The addition of Gemini AI-powered audio in Google Docs is a major step toward making documents more accessible, interactive, and inclusive. It helps professionals, students, and businesses save time, spot errors, and improve collaboration. As AI in productivity tools continues to evolve, this feature positions Google Docs as a leader in AI-powered document editing and accessibility solutions.
