Delimitation process of J&K to start soon

Delimitation is the process of fixing limits or boundaries of Lok Sabha and state Assembly seats on the basis of population. A four-member Delimitation Commission, including a member of the EC, carries out this task. Sources in the government were very clear that the EC will be asked to commence the delimitation exercise soon.

Delimitation stands for the defining of the boundaries and fixing limits or boundaries of Lok Sabha and state Assembly seats on the basis of population. A four-member Delimitation Commission, including a member of the EC, carries out this task.

With the commencement of Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 got the nod of Parliament, the Election Commission on August 13 held an internal meeting on the delimitation of constituencies ahead of elections to the new Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and his colleagues were briefed by senior officers on the new law at the meeting.

Now, the Delimitation Commission would start the process as per the law. With the Election Commission recently held internal discussions on the delimitation of constituencies ahead of elections to the new Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, former Chief Election Commissioner and ex-officio member of the Delimitation Commission N. Gopalaswami said, the increase in the number of seats was “an issue which is a political decision of Parliament”.

Before the bifurcation of the state of J&K, Kashmir region had 46 Assembly seats, while Jammu and Ladakh region had 37 and four seats, respectively and the total population would be divided over the 114 seats to get an average number of electors per constituency. The boundaries of the constituencies would then be drawn while ensuring that administrative units are not split as far as possible.
