By MYBRANDBOOK
A group of Hackers managed to crack Tesla Model 3 cars systema and win a prize amount of $35,000 by using a 'JIT bug in the renderer' to take control of the system during a hacking event Pwn2own, is a global event organized by elite white hackers to showcase the vulnerabilities in popular electronics, gadgets and services on last Saturday..
This is exactly what happened with a couple of hackers. Not only did they successfully hack into the car and get to keep it, it was a Tesla!
Amat Cama and Richard Zhu of team Fluoroacetate exposed a vulnerability in the vehicle system during the Pwn2Own 2019 hacking competition, organised by Trend Micro's "Zero Day Initiative (ZDI)", held here. Team Fluoroacetate comprised of above two guys managed to hack inside a Tesla Model 3 car through its web browser and walked away with the most honours, too.
"Since launching our bug bounty programme in 2014, we have continuously increased our investments into partnerships with security researchers to ensure that all Tesla owners constantly benefit from the brightest minds in the community," the report quoted David Lau, Vice President of Vehicle Software at Tesla as saying.
As part of Tesla's bug bounty programme, the company had given away hundreds of thousands of dollars in rewards to hackers who exposed vulnerabilities in its systems.
The hackers targeted the infotainment system on the Tesla Model 3 and used a "JIT bug in the renderer" to take control of the system, Electrek reported on Saturday.
The EV-maker was fairly quick to fix vulnerabilities exposed by white hat hackers, the report said.
Apart from hacking into the Tesla Model 3 car, the duo also successfully hacked Safari browser in just four minutes flat. They won Rs 2.6 crore of the total prize money worth Rs 3.8 crore.
