The large-scale project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will focus on renewable energy-powered AI infrastructure, generate thousands of jobs, and strengthen Maharashtra’s position as a major technology and digital infrastructure destination in India.
The Government of Maharashtra has signed a memorandum of understanding worth Rs 1.14 lakh crore with AM Intelligence Labs Private Limited to develop a major green data centre and artificial intelligence infrastructure project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The agreement was formalised in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Mantralaya, as the state government intensified efforts to attract investments in next-generation technology and digital infrastructure.
Officials said the proposed development will include an Integrated Green Data Centre Park along with a large AI Compute Hub designed to support high-capacity computing requirements. The project is expected to become one of the country’s largest AI and digital infrastructure initiatives.
According to the state government, the project is likely to create nearly 8,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. An additional 2,000 jobs are expected during the construction phase.
Authorities said employment opportunities will emerge across multiple high-technology sectors, including software development, data science, cloud operations, and infrastructure management.
Renewable energy to power AI infrastructure
Officials stated that the entire project will operate using renewable energy sources, aligning with Maharashtra’s broader focus on sustainable industrial development and green infrastructure expansion.
The planned facility will have a total power capacity of 500 megawatts and is expected to deploy nearly 2.5 lakh advanced AI chipsets. Industry observers believe the scale of the project could significantly enhance India’s AI computing and data processing capabilities.
The development has been planned in two phases. The first phase, comprising 200 megawatts of capacity, is targeted for completion by 2028. The remaining 300 megawatts are expected to become operational by 2030.
Project linked to Maharashtra’s technology policies
Government officials said the initiative will be developed under Maharashtra’s Information Technology Policy 2023 and the Green Integrated Data Centre Park Policy 2024.
The state administration believes the investment will further strengthen Maharashtra’s standing as a preferred destination for artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, and advanced technology investments.
The project also reflects the growing demand for AI-focused infrastructure in India as companies and governments increase investments in data processing, cloud computing, and digital transformation technologies.
With large-scale computing facilities becoming increasingly critical for AI development, the state government sees the project as an important step toward positioning Maharashtra as a key hub in India’s emerging digital economy.
