Jio Platforms has expanded JioPC beyond its broadband ecosystem, allowing consumers with a stable internet connection to access cloud-based computing resources on existing computers without replacing hardware or undertaking conventional upgrades.
Reliance Industries-owned Jio Platforms has opened its JioPC virtual desktop service to consumers irrespective of their telecom or broadband provider. Earlier restricted to JioHome broadband subscribers, the service can now be accessed through any stable internet connection, including broadband and dependable 4G or 5G networks.
JioPC essentially turns an existing computer into a gateway to a cloud-based desktop environment. Instead of relying entirely on the physical hardware installed in a PC, users can access computing resources hosted in the cloud. Jio is offering configurations of up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, making the service particularly relevant for people using older computers.
The company said users can subscribe to and activate JioPC in less than five minutes. The process does not require data migration, additional hardware installation or system downtime, potentially making it a simpler option for consumers looking to extend the useful life of existing devices.
Cloud computing for ageing PCs
Jio is positioning the service as an alternative to replacing older computers or spending on hardware upgrades. According to the company, even an eight-year-old computer can access resources required for modern applications because computationally demanding workloads, including AI-related processing, are handled in the cloud.
The service could have applications across households, educational institutions, professionals and small businesses, particularly where existing computers are no longer capable of comfortably running increasingly resource-intensive software. Users can access functions such as web browsing, document creation and virtual learning through the cloud-based desktop environment.
JioPC is available in two variants. The standard JioPC plan provides 8GB of RAM and 500GB of storage, while JioPC Ultra offers 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Both plans are available with different validity periods.
Subscription plans and pricing
For two months, JioPC costs ₹1,000, while JioPC Ultra is priced at ₹1,200. The five-month plans are priced at ₹2,000 and ₹2,500, respectively.
For users seeking longer access, the 10+2 month validity option costs ₹4,000 for JioPC and ₹5,000 for JioPC Ultra. The longer-duration plans effectively provide an extended subscription period while giving users access to the same respective cloud configurations.
The broader availability of JioPC marks a shift in Jio Platforms’ approach from a service linked to its own broadband customers to a cloud-computing offering accessible across networks. By separating the service from the underlying connectivity provider, Jio is targeting a wider consumer base that may want improved computing capabilities without investing in a new physical machine.
As AI-enabled applications and cloud-based services become increasingly common, JioPC is designed to address the hardware limitations faced by users with ageing computers while shifting more computing workloads from local devices to the cloud.
