From Operational Efficiency to Energy Transition

Sanjeev Sinha
Chief Operating Officer - Hygge Energy

For power utilities, true digital transformation is measured on the balance sheet and at the grid edge. Hygge Energy replaces process-heavy committees with lean, outcome-linked governance that prioritizes collection efficiency, network reliability, and asset optimization. Through smart metering architectures, predictive AI tools, and cross-functional upskilling, it enables DISCOMs to unlock hidden revenue streams, seamlessly integrate renewable energy sources, and deliver world-class consumer services.

Outcome-Linked Governance & Commercial Discipline
Improving IT governance in a power distribution company (DISCOM) is less about adding committees and more about linking every IT decision to measurable operational and financial outcomes - AT&C loss reduction, billing efficiency, reliability, and cash flow. Here are the practical, outcome-driven approach - we have start with Outcome-Linked Governance (not IT-led governance). Most DISCOMs run IT as a support function. That is the core problem. There is a need to shift to business-led governance and IT as an enabler of measurable KPIs. We have defined five to seven top outcomes, e.g. AT&C loss reduction (%), Billing efficiency (% billed / energy input), Collection efficiency (% collected / billed), SAIDI/SAIFI (reliability), Consumer complaint resolution time, Renewable / DER integration readiness etc. Hence, every IT project must map to at least one of these.

Accelerating Reliability, Renewable Integration, and Consumer Services
IT strategy in a power distribution company drives growth by improving billing accuracy, reducing AT&C losses, and enhancing collection efficiency through smart metering, analytics, and integrated systems. It enables operational efficiency via SCADA, outage management, and predictive maintenance, lowering costs and improving reliability. IT also creates new revenue streams through EV charging, rooftop solar integration, and energy platforms. At a national level, we support reforms under Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme by enabling loss reduction and financial sustainability. We facilitate renewable integration aligned with Ministry of Power goals and improves consumer services, supporting Digital India. Thus, IT becomes a strategic enabler of profitability, sustainability, and energy transition.

Cultivating Human + AI Utility Team
We are preparing our workforce for the AI era by investing in digital and data skills, especially in analytics, smart metering, and grid automation. We are training engineers and field staff to use AI-enabled tools for predictive maintenance, outage management, and demand forecasting. We are also partnering with technology firms and academic institutions to build capabilities in machine learning and cybersecurity. Programs aligned with Digital India promote digital literacy across roles. We are also redesigning roles, creating data-driven decision teams, and encouraging cross-functional collaboration. Leadership focus is shifting toward a human + AI model, ensuring employees adapt to automation while improving efficiency, reliability, and customer service outcomes.
