Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) is the Central Transmission Utility of India and has installed dedicated overhead Optic Fibre communication Network under Unified Load Despatch & Communication (ULDC) Schemes for Real Time operation of the National Grid. POWERGRID diversified into Telecom business in 2001 to utilize spare telecommunication infrastructure of ULDC schemes, leveraging its country wide transmission infrastructure. The broadband optic fibre backbone network has been developed based on electricity network topology. The network also includes installation of underground optic fibre cable to connect POWERGRID sub-stations not located near the cities or where overhead transmission lines is not available and to create Point of Presence (PoP) / access links within cities to cater to customers requirement.
POWERGRID’s telecom network offers a number of advantages over a typical underground optic fibre networks, being secure and free from rodent menace and vandalism. Telecom Network over Transmission system ensures very high availability for Telecom Network. Mostly Live line installation without disrupting power flow offers faster roll out. Longer life of OPGW is another major advantage.
POWERGRID has presently established about 30,000 kms of Telecom Network (backbone as well as last mile) and connectivity has been provided to about 320 Points of Presence (PoPs) including all metros, major cities & towns, mainly through the Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) laid on its power transmission lines. POWERGRID has a very strong network presence in Jammu & Kashmir and North Eastern states because of its inherent strength of overhead telecom network on high voltage transmission lines.

POWERGRID’s telecommunication network benefits from the extensive geographic reach of its power transmission network and covers substantially all the main territories of India. Its network deploys a Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system and SDH (n X STM 16) systems and MPLS VPN for providing data services.
